Wooden Garage Doors vs. Faux Wood Garage Doors

Many of our customer who are looking to buy a wooden style garage door are asking us which martial is better to use - real wood garage door or faux wood garage door that looks like the real wooden door.
To answer, you need to ask yourself a few questions:

Are you looking for a free maintenance door or are you willing to maintain your garage door once every year or two?

Wooden garage door need maintenance every one or two years, depends on the exposer to weather conditions.
In California, most chances you will need to sand, stain and paint the garage door once every year or two to maintain the look of the door and for it to perform safely.
Faux wood garage door is almost maintenance free, there is no need to stain or paint, the only maintenance the door requires is ones a year lubrication (recommend for any type of garage door).

How important is it to you that the door will look like a real wooden door?

There is no question about it!  Real wood door will look like the real thing--!.. As long as you stain and paint it properly.
Faux wood door came a long way in the last 5 years and today you can find models that look and feel like a real wooden garage door, for the average eye it is very hard to tell the difference between the two.
In fact, we display our Canyon Ridge collection models in our showroom and when a customer is asked – "what material do you think that the door is made out of?" 100% answered -  WOOD! . Bzzzz wrong answer, this is a faux wood door!

Do you live in fire zone?

If you live in California there is a good chance you live in a fire zone. Per California building codes, you can't use combust materiel in those arias so wood door is not an option.
 

Price -

Purchase price is about the same, however, if you calculate the maintenance down the road, no doubt that faux wood door will be cheaper overall.

Insulation -

Both wooden and faux garage doors has the option of being insulated or non - insulated, they range from 6-18 R value.

       

What type of Warranty do you wish to have?

Faux wood doors comes with 10 year to a lifetime manufacture warranty, depends on the model you choose.
Wood doors comes with one year manufacture warranty and the door must be stained or painted according to the manufacture recommendation and you must follow their application instruction or your warranty will be voided.

Odd sizes -

Wooden doors are Custom made and can be built at any size and shape. Faux wood doors comes in different sizes and can be fitted to almost any opening size. In case of custom opening like an arched top for instance that need special cutting to comply with the opening, faux wood door will not work nicely as real wood door.
 

So, what did we learn?

If your dream house comes with wooden door and this is the only option you consider - at least now you know what to expect.
